Some boffins from the State University of New York at Stony Brook have discovered by accident that you can loose fat by simply just shaking yourself.

All they did was to put these little furry mice on a platform, vibrating so lightly that only a few people would notice, for about 15 minutes a day, 5 days a week. After the trial the poor shaken creatures had 27% less body fat than their unshaken counterparts!

Dr Rubin from the University gave his expert opinion:

“I was the biggest skeptic in the world,” Dr. Rubin said. “And I sit here and say, ‘This can’t possibly be happening.’ I feel like the credibility of my scientific career is sitting on a razor’s edge between ‘Wow, this is really cool,’ and ‘These people are nuts.’”

The US National Institute of Health have taken interest in the discovery and are keen to begin trials on humans, and have chosen the elderly as the most likely candidates. Now this is one of the reasons I love science, how many chances in your life to you get an excuse to shake old people and see what happens!

One theory of why this happens is that the fat is being turned to bone. When you contract your muscles they shake and your bones react to this shaking by developing density to support the extra pressure applied to them.

Other theories are the mice are having to tense their muscles very slightly as they are shaken, which burns calories, or even more simply the mice were just scared!
