The Bupa Great Manchester Run

May 23rd, 2008 by Giles Smith

Giles Smith running for it!

Well I did the run, only doing it in a pretty poor 54 minutes. The main problem was there just wasn’t enough room for anyone at the beginning, it was far too crowded! So I had to run the second half in around 20 minutes or I would have taken longer than an hour!

Anyway had a great day, loads of us from UKFast.net ran and most of us finished under and hour.

Desktop Clutter Art Competition

Homer and Spider Pig

Quote

1. Clean up your desktop.
2. Get an empty folder (or a set of folders in different colors,) document icons, or whatever other thing is around your desktop. Don’t get big documents, as you will need to duplicate them to create your image.
3. Third, deactivate automatic snap-to-grid in the view desktop options in Windows or Mac OS X.
4. Optionally, load an image in the background to “trace.”
5. Start placing your folders/icons/whatever, always on a row and rendering the subject matter from top to bottom to ensure that no text from the icons on the top rows overlaps the icons on the bottom rows.

If you ever find yourself bored at work and feel like doing something creative, why not have a go!

Robotic Snake Can Perform Heart Surgeries

April 12th, 2008 by Giles Smith

Cardio SnakeA lot of people are scared of going under the knife for a variety of fears which grip them. That’s why scientists are constantly trying to find a way to create surgical methods with lower risk factors. At the Carnegie Mellon University, a snakelike robot called “CardioArm” was devised to aid in heart surgeries. The only contact the surgeon makes with the patient’s body is to make an incision so the robot can enter the system. Once inside, CardioArm is controlled by a joystick and a computer for monitoring.

For some reason this looks a lot more scary than going under the knife? See what you think have a look at the other pic on that post. Be warned that after some more tests the good doctors would love to stick this down your throat, or any other openings that don’t require a knife to get into…

More Site Updates - Picasa Web Albums

March 14th, 2008 by Giles Smith

Picasa LogoFollowing the re-organisation of this site I have also got rid of the embedded Gallery2 which, whilst being an amazing piece of software, worried me about the future of my photos. It occured to me that the gallery requires a lot of space, and my current host wouldn’t be able to provide that space as the gallery grew.

Well after some deliberation I chose Picasa Web Albums. As with all Google products, the interface was simple and streamlined, features are easy to find and edit, and albums don’t end up looking clustered and messy like some of the competition (especially Flikr, which I can’t stand!). I also already use Picasa on my desktop at home, so updating was easy!

Hunting around in the wordpress plugins archive allowed me to find a widget to keep my random image in the right column, and the gallery link in the top nav now whisks you off to the picasa website and my gallery

Well like before, what do you think, let me know…
